Energy sources

In the Republic of Moldova, the main source of electricity comes from thermal power plants that operate on gas, coal, and fuel oil, with a total installed capacity of 2881.4 MW, of which:

  • The available power of the electricity units that can operate on gas is 1881.4 MW;
  • The available power of the electricity units that can operate on coal is 800 MW;
  • The available power of the electricity units that can operate on fuel oil is 1844 MW.


The rest of the electricity is generated from hydraulic resources and renewable energy sources.

  • The installed capacity of hydroelectric power plants is 64 MW;
  • The installed capacity of power plants that use renewable energy sources:
    • Photovoltaic power plants – 249.95 MW;
    • Wind power plants – 174.6 MW;
    • Biogas power plants – 7.05 MW.
